Ever Wondered What a Sunset Looks Like in InfraRed and UltraViolet?
Have you ever wondered what a sunset looks like in IR and UV, with all visible light filtered out?
On a camping trip last fall, I had a camp site that was East facing, meaning my view of the sunset would be blocked by the treeline. I took this as an opportunity to break out my full spectrum converted Nikon Z5, put a UV/IR filter on the end of my 14-30mm/4 lens, and see what kind of light and colours I would get shooting a timelapse from the start of golden hour through to the end of blue hour.
I was disappointed how dim the night stars were looking, so I took the filter off when I did my battery swap. At the tail end of the timelapse, you can even see some northern lights - that's right, I ...

I Used to Art Vlog, but then I Stopped.
Просмотров 452 месяца назад
Back in my 20's I was a regular vlogger, posting to my on-going "Kyle Paints" series. When I entered my 30's, my vlogging slowed down considerably, and I moved my focus more towards my abstract visual/noise "Weird Stuff" series of videos. The original idea behind the art vlog was as a value-add to art collectors, so they could hear the whole "artist's thoughts in their own words without anyone ...
Sudburry Timelapses (Failed Northern Lights Attempt)
Просмотров 754 месяца назад
Spring 2024 was a season of unusually bright Northern Lights visible far further South than normal - or at least it would have been if I wasn't living in the nation's largest city where everything is washed out in light pollution. In May, just a few days after the highlight of the light show, I was sent up North to Sudbury for some location work. There was still a good chance of catching some o...
Kyle Vlogs: March 2024. Testing Out The Rode Wireless Pro on a Nikon Z6
Просмотров 194 месяца назад
In the winter of 2024, I realized I hadn't been going on any photo walks for a while. I had just picked up the new Tamron 150-500 and was really excited about it so it was attached to my camera 24/7 for a few months as I was testing it out. But that lens is so big and heavy I didn't want to take it out very far, so I just didn't bother going out on photo walks. This had to change. I put a small...
Kyle Paints 2024: Time Management and Motivation

Whenever I enter a period of 'high production mode' in my artmaking, it's hard to maintain a sense of structure in my days. One of the ways I maintain some structure is to set out a list of daily tasks, and when I finish those, I go for a nice walk in the park during golden hour, when the sunlight is at it's prettiest. The problem comes when I don't finish in time and miss my walk. I can't brin...
AI 'Enhanced' Walk down Yonge Street, Toronto.
Просмотров 368 месяцев назад
I went for a walk Down Toronto's Yonge Street down to Dundas Square, taking a photo every half a second. Then I exported the footage at standard def, then ran the footage though the Topaz AI Video enhancement tools to stabilize, add frames, and increase the resolution. Rather than sticking to one enhancement model like the previous two videos in this series, I jumped between several. This is wh...
AI "Enhanced" Hyperlapse From OCAD to Yonge St.

I've been playing around with AI image and video enhancement tools - shooting footage beyond what is reasonable to fix, then setting the sliders on the various software tools too high, then enjoying the blurry smudgy wobbly weirdness. I put my 14-30mm/4 on my Z6 and set up a timelapse sequence, shooting one shot every half second. The lens was stopped down and the ISO limited to 100 to increase...

Weird Stuff: AI 'Enhanced' Walk Over a Foggy Bridge
Просмотров 3611 месяцев назад
During some exceptionally foggy weather, I took my camera out for a walk over a bridge. The handheld footage was so rough and shaky I considered it unusable. I ran the footage though some AI de-shaking/stabilization and frame interpolation software (Topaz Video AI) with the settings deliberately cranked way too high, and the video AI made some interesting mistakes. I opened up FL Studio 11 and ...
Sonic Art: Kyle's Weird Ear Thing (part 2)
Просмотров 2011 месяцев назад
I made three critical mistakes in my previous attempt at recreating an artwork that used an immersive recording technique. The first mistake was poorly attaching the lavs to the ears so unfiltered sound would mix with the filtered-through-the-ear sound. The second mistake was over-compressing the dynamics of the audio in the editing process. The third mistake was just a minor case of connecting...
Sonic Art: Recreating One of My Favourite Artworks (Part 1)
Просмотров 2411 месяцев назад
I am attempting to recreate one of my favourite artworks. Years ago, I experienced a brilliant sculptural installation/sound art piece called "The Paradise Institute" by artists Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller. It involves walking into a large wooden box containing a forced-perspective theatre set and a pair of headphones. Their recording techniques created a sensation of really being there...
A Few Final Touches On My Paintings Before the Big Show: Kyle Paints 2023
Просмотров 1611 месяцев назад
I talk about a few of the pieces from my latest show. My biggest problem is I overpaint, so I stop when I'm 90% done, take the painting out of my studio, put it up in my living space, and live with the piece for a while. Eventually, it speaks to me and tells me what it needs. Filmed: September 2023 kyleclements.com
Framing Paintings: When a Shortcut Goes Wrong. Kyle Paints 2023

I'm getting ready for my art show. I thought I was being smart using a roller instead of a brush to apply paint to my frames for my paintings. It wasn't until the final finishing stage that the effect of orange peeling reared their ugly heads and I had to go back and sand everything down and start over. kyleclements.com

Toronto CNE Air Show (2023)
Просмотров 142Год назад
I thought I'd check out the CNE airshow this year. Instead of being terrified by the loud roar of the jets flying overhead, I might as well be entertained by them. I didn't actually go to the CNE, I just went to the beach somewhat close to where the airshow was happening and enjoyed it from there - for free. Pro tip: If you have a cracked tooth and are in a lot of pain, an air show with the bri...
